Not every relationship needs calm. In some, intimacy keeps the love alive; in others, money and security; in others, shared long-term plans; and in some, time spent alone. Even within one relationship. What is essential for the two of you can’t be known in advance. Or can it?
Numerology has a simple method for this: the relationship number. It takes two pieces of information (the date of birth and the birth name), and you can work it out for yourself and your partner in about 2 minutes. In this article we go through the calculation step by step on a made-up example, then look at what the shared number means from 1 to 9.
In short
- Your own relationship number = Life Path number + Soul Number, reduced to a single digit.
- Your shared relationship number = your number + your partner’s number, reduced to a single digit.
- The result (1–9) shows what your relationship needs in order to work in the long run, and what you need to watch out for.
Why does every relationship need something different?
Most relationship advice sounds as if every couple needed the same thing: more communication, more time together, more romance. In practice, though, what keeps one couple alive suffocates another. One couple is happy waking up in a different country every weekend. Another is happy because they finally have a garden of their own. A third is happy because each of them gets two hours of quiet a day.
Numerology does not predict, and it does not tell you whether a relationship is “good” or “bad”. What it is good for is showing what kind of environment a given relationship needs, and where its weak spot is. The relationship number is the simplest version of this, one anyone can calculate.
The two components of the relationship number
1. The Life Path number: what you need your whole life
The Life Path number comes from your date of birth and shows the main direction of your whole life: the thing without which you don’t feel you are in the right place. Here is how to calculate it:
- Write down your full date of birth digit by digit (year, month, day).
- Add the digits up one by one.
- Keep reducing the total (by adding its digits) until a single digit remains.
Important, and this differs from the usual rule: for this calculation the master numbers (11, 22, 33) are reduced too: 11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6. The relationship number always uses the plain, single-digit value. (In a complete numerology reading the master numbers stay, but this quick method does not need them.)
2. The Soul Number: the inner need you can’t live without
The Soul Number comes from the vowels of your birth name. It is the inner motivation that recharges you, and without which you run empty.
The values of the vowels (on the Pythagorean chart):
| Vowel | Value |
|---|---|
| A | 1 |
| E | 5 |
| I | 9 |
| O | 6 |
| U | 3 |
| Y (when it sounds like a vowel) | 7 |
Two rules most people trip over:
- Always use your birth name, not your married name or a nickname. The Soul Number comes from the name you were given at birth.
- Y counts as a vowel when it sounds like one (for example in Lynn or Kelly). When it sounds like a consonant, as in Yolanda or Maya, it doesn’t count.
You reduce the sum of the vowels to a single digit, just like the Life Path number.
How to calculate it: a made-up example, step by step
Let’s take a fictional person, Mark Thomas Hill, born on 02.08.1993 (February 8, 1993).
Step 1: the Life Path number
1 + 9 + 9 + 3 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 8 = 32 → 3 + 2 = 5
Step 2: the Soul Number
Write the value above each vowel of the birth name:
MARK THOMAS HILL → 1 + 6 + 1 + 9 = 17 → 1 + 7 = 8
Step 3: your own relationship number
Life Path + Soul Number: 5 + 8 = 13 → 1 + 3 = 4
Mark’s own relationship number is therefore 4.
The shared number: add it to your partner’s
Now do the same for the love of your life. Let’s say Mark’s partner (also a made-up person) is Emma Louise Carter, born on 04.21.1996 (April 21, 1996):
- Life Path: 1 + 9 + 9 + 6 + 0 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 32 → 5
- Soul Number: EMMA LOUISE CARTER → 5 + 1 + 6 + 3 + 9 + 5 + 1 + 5 = 35 → 8
- Own relationship number: 5 + 8 = 13 → 4
Finally, add the two relationship numbers together: 4 + 4 = 8. Mark and Emma’s shared relationship number is 8. You can read what that means below.

What does the relationship number mean from 1 to 9?
For each number we look at two things: what your relationship cannot work without, and where the trap is that grows out of that same strength.
Relationship number 1: activity and innovation
What is essential for you: constant movement, innovation, and listening only to yourselves. Don’t be just another couple. This relationship lives on playing by your own rules and on something new always happening.
What to watch out for: there will be lots of sudden, short, heated arguments. Don’t swallow them, say things out loud, but be careful not to go too far the other way. Honesty is not the same as hurting each other.
Relationship number 2: understanding and emotional closeness
What is essential for you: understanding and emotion. Don’t overdrive your life: rest a lot and plan things for just the two of you. Quiet time together is the fuel of this relationship.
What to watch out for: too much sensitivity can easily turn into drama. A misunderstood sentence can quickly grow into days of hurt feelings here, so it is worth clearing things up in time.
Relationship number 3: social life and fun
What is essential for you: parties, fun, friends, shared experiences, photos: anything that brings joy and lightness. This relationship blossoms when it has an audience and something to celebrate.
What to watch out for: if you only want to show off and please the outside world, feelings get pushed into the background very quickly. The perfect couple photo does not replace a real conversation.
Relationship number 4: shared plans and solid foundations
What is essential for you: physical health, sport, exercise and tangible shared plans: a home together, a business together, even having children. This relationship lives on building.
What to watch out for: while chasing possessions and money, leave time to enjoy what you have built. If everything is only ever about the next goal, the relationship turns into a workplace.
Relationship number 5: freedom and adventure
What is essential for you: lots of travel, new experiences, fun. Freedom matters a great deal to both of you. This relationship is killed by routine, not by arguments.
What to watch out for: don’t let the desire for freedom blur the boundaries of the relationship. Talk openly, in advance, about where the line is that neither of you can accept.
Relationship number 6: family and home
What is essential for you: this is one of the best relationship numbers. The classic picture: a barbecue with friends, a green lawn, a white picket fence, a golden retriever running around while the kids play in the garden. For you, having a family of your own is the foundation.
What to watch out for: don’t fret over money, and don’t keep biting at each other over it. Tension around money is what cools the warmth of a home the fastest.
Relationship number 7: depth and inner worlds
What is essential for you: getting to know each other’s inner world, shared interests and long-term plans. You need to respect each other’s privacy: here personal space is not distance, it is a condition.
What to watch out for: don’t let the relationship become too cerebral and emotionally cold, all about lecturing each other. Next to the clever conversations, you need hugs too.
Relationship number 8: success, passion, quality
What is essential for you: passion, success, money, and always having something extra. Avoiding hardship and mediocrity is not a luxury for you, it is a need. Having money and enjoying it matters.
What to watch out for: don’t let money, the high life and status be the only things that matter. If they disappear for a while and nothing else holds the relationship together, love can go out the window fast.
Relationship number 9: big shared dreams
What is essential for you: grand shared plans and dreams you both believe in. Together you can make a huge impression on others, by teaching, inspiring or building a community.
What to watch out for: keep an overly idealized dream world in its place. Otherwise the relationship can easily become a story full of failures, manipulation and drama, but with few real results.
Summary table
| Number | What is essential | The trap |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | activity, innovation, your own way | heated, overblown arguments |
| 2 | understanding, emotions, resting together | oversensitivity, drama |
| 3 | social life, fun, experiences | trying to please the outside world |
| 4 | shared plans, health, solid foundations | chasing money without enjoying it |
| 5 | freedom, travel, adventure | blurred boundaries |
| 6 | family, home, community | fretting over money |
| 7 | depth, shared interests, privacy | emotional coldness, lecturing |
| 8 | success, passion, quality | only status matters |
| 9 | big shared dreams and a mission | dream world, few real results |
The 4 most common calculation mistakes
- You don’t use your birth name. A married name or a nickname gives a different Soul Number.
- You keep the master number. With this method, 11, 22 and 33 are reduced further too.
- You leave out a Y that sounds like a vowel. If the Y in your name sounds like a vowel, it counts as one (7).
- You only look at your own number. The shared number is what tells you about the relationship, and for that you need your partner’s number too.
Frequently asked questions
What is the relationship number in numerology?
The relationship number is the sum of your Life Path number and your Soul Number, reduced to a single digit. If you add your partner’s, you get your shared relationship number, which shows what your relationship needs in order to work in the long run.
How do I calculate my Soul Number?
Write down your full birth name and add up the values of the vowels: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3, and Y = 7 when it sounds like a vowel. Reduce the total to a single digit.
What if I get 11, 22 or 33?
With this method these are reduced further too: 11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6. Always use the single-digit value for the relationship number.
Does the relationship number tell us whether we are compatible?
It is neither a verdict nor a prediction. It shows what kind of environment your relationship needs, and which trap is worth watching for. Deeper compatibility (Life Path, Day Number, Destiny Number) is examined in the relationship numerology analysis.
Does it only work for couples?
You can calculate it the same way with your parents, a sibling or your best friend. In that case the shared number shows what that relationship needs.
