Soul Number

The sum of the vowels in your birth name: what you need, what recharges you and what you can't function without.

The Soul Number is the sum of the vowels in your full birth name. It shows your strongest inner need: what recharges you, what you can't function well without, and what you have to feel in whatever you do.

The Destiny Number is the behavior people see; the Soul Number is the fuel behind it. It comes from the name, but nobody can see it from the outside, they can only get to know it. If this need goes unmet for long, your motivation drains across the board and your mood sinks, often without you knowing why. If it points in a completely different direction from your Life Path or Day Number, it causes real inner conflict.

It matters most in relationships and in business. For lasting happiness, a partner's Soul Number shouldn't be of the opposite quality to yours. And since all it takes is a name, it is the shortest route to knowing what would make someone happy, and the easiest way to reach them.

How to work it out

Take the vowels of your full birth name (A, E, I, O, U) and add their values: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3. Reduce the total by adding its digits until one digit is left; 11, 22 and 33 stay whole.

Y and W count as vowels only when they sound like one. Y is a vowel in Emily or Bailey and a consonant in Yolanda; W can sound like a vowel in names like Dwayne or Dwight. Their value never changes (Y = 7, W = 5): your choice only decides whether it goes into the Soul Number or the Personality Number. The calculator asks you about every Y and W in your name.

Example 1: Daniel Hughes
A 1 + I 9 + E 5 + U 3 + E 5 = 23 → 2+3 = 5

Example 2: Emily Rose Carter (the Y in Emily sounds like a vowel)
E 5 + I 9 + Y 7 + O 6 + E 5 + A 1 + E 5 = 38 → 3+8 = 11
With the Y counted as a consonant, the vowels would total 31 → 4.

The numbers as Soul Number

1

Soul Number 1

Leader, director

As a Soul Number, the 1 has to be the author of its own decisions, with nobody looking over its shoulder. It settles down when it has its own patch (a job, a business, a project) where its word goes, and it needs to be first or best at something and to hear so out loud.

Once it hears that it chose well, the pressure eases and its helpful, protective side comes out.

Strengths
  • Recharged by a free hand
  • Calm when it sets the pace
  • Driven to stand on its own two feet
  • Protective once it feels recognized
Shadow side
  • Drained when others decide for it
  • Tense and irritable when it feels average
  • Loses heart in a subordinate role
  • Feels asking for help as defeat
2

Soul Number 2

Supporter

As a Soul Number, the 2 needs to belong to someone and to know that person will stay. It is in balance when it can be useful to someone, in a calm, predictable setting with touch and closeness, and when its help is noticed and thanked.

It stays in balance when there is someone (a partner, a friend, family) it can safely tell what it feels.

Strengths
  • Recharged by genuinely helping
  • Calm when there is peace around it
  • Needs a gentle tone and physical closeness
  • Content when its help is appreciated
Shadow side
  • Feels used when nobody says thanks
  • Drained by having to decide everything alone
  • Gets hurt but stays silent
  • Loneliness pulls it down fast
3

Soul Number 3

Networker, entertainer

As a Soul Number, the 3 needs to be noticed and to know that what it does gets seen. It needs a stage (talking, work, sport, creating) plus people, movement and praise, and silence, monotony and being alone drain it fast.

It becomes truly balanced when its own standards count too, not only what others say about it.

Strengths
  • Recharged by good conversation and laughter
  • Thrives on a varied schedule
  • Praise is its fuel
  • Enjoys cheering others up
Shadow side
  • Drained by silence and routine
  • Dreads being seen as boring
  • One critical remark deflates it
  • Smiles while sad inside
4

Soul Number 4

Precise, persistent

As a Soul Number, the 4 has to know the ground is firm and that tomorrow is taken care of. Order, a steady routine and no surprises keep it well, and it needs something tangible to show (a place of its own, money put aside, a finished job) along with the trust of people who depend on it.

It is content once it lets itself rest and stops measuring its worth by output alone.

Strengths
  • Recharged by a predictable tomorrow
  • Calm when its surroundings are in order
  • Takes a given word seriously
  • Content moving forward slowly but surely
Shadow side
  • Drained by upheaval and constant change
  • Can't forgive a broken promise
  • Won't allow itself to rest
  • Money worries keep it up at night
5

Soul Number 5

Explorer

As a Soul Number, the 5 needs freedom above all: to be able to leave, switch or decide at any time, with nothing tying it down. It needs constant novelty (new places, people, travel, challenges), to live things firsthand rather than hear about them, and people who believe in it.

Balance comes from one or two things it sticks with by choice, so that freedom isn't just escape.

Strengths
  • Recharged by new places and people
  • Calm when there is a way out
  • Carried by its faith in itself
  • Enjoys risk and surprise
Shadow side
  • Strict rules and long commitments trip its fuse
  • Afraid of missing out
  • Runs rather than fixes
  • Forced routine leaves it hollow
6

Soul Number 6

Team player

As a Soul Number, the 6 needs to feel safe and part of a team where it belongs. It needs peace, no hard decisions to face alone, people to care for who show their gratitude, and financial well-being in a beautiful, orderly home.

It is truly content when it dares to say what it thinks, because avoiding an argument doesn't bring inner peace.

Strengths
  • Recharged when its family is doing well
  • Calm in a harmonious home
  • Strengthened by caring for others
  • Glad to be asked for advice
Shadow side
  • Drained when everyone only takes
  • Keeps count of what it gave to whom
  • Can't be well amid scarcity or mess
  • Blames itself first when there is tension
7

Soul Number 7

Deliberate thinker

As a Soul Number, the 7 has to know the reasons behind what goes on around it, whether in people, at work or with money. It needs a place and time to retreat to where nobody crowds it, and it wants its words taken seriously, which matters more to it than praise.

It finds balance when it says what is on its mind instead of turning it over alone for months.

Strengths
  • Recharged by silence and solitude
  • Calm once it sees how things work
  • Values genuine people
  • Loves learning and going deep
Shadow side
  • Drained by noise and small talk
  • Can't stand lies or double games
  • Never forgets being deceived
  • Broods for months instead of speaking up

Soul Number 8

Achiever, businessperson

As a Soul Number, the 8 needs to feel it has achieved something that shows: a position, results, financial success. It needs to be the one deciding and carrying the responsibility, a challenge with real stakes, and recognition that it chose well.

It becomes truly successful and calm once it learns that money and power last by sharing them with the people beside it.

Strengths
  • Recharged by visible results

As a Soul Number, the 9 needs a big goal or vision worth getting up for, and to see its influence on others and its ideas becoming real. It needs beauty and order around it, and it needs to find a calling and an identity of its own.

It is in its place once it finds its own calling and its own face.

  • Takes criticism as rejection
  • Mess and ugliness sour its mood
  • Aimless and low without a goal
11

Soul Number 11

Master Intuitive, star

As a Soul Number, the 11 needs to be accepted as it is, without being called strange for seeing things differently. It needs to trust its intuition without constant questioning, and a calm, low-tension environment, because it feels what goes on in other people in amplified form.

It stays calm when it regularly releases the tension it builds up (sport, movement, quiet) and uses its intuition instead of suppressing it.

Strengths
  • Recharged when its intuition is trusted
  • Calm when people are honest with it
  • Loves original, unusual ideas
  • Enjoys being the pioneer
Shadow side
  • Thrown by lies and emotional pressure
  • Carries other people's tension

Soul Number 22

Master Builder, big-league player

As a Soul Number, the 22 needs to be part of something big and to create something that will outlast it. It needs a large, tangible goal it can pursue by its own plan, recognition for the work it puts in, and loyalty it can count on.

It feels whole when it gives more of itself than just its work and can drop the toughness with the people closest to it.

Strengths

As a Soul Number, the 33 needs to teach and advise, and to see its advice taken. It needs a community that listens and sees it as wise and exemplary, plenty of recognition and attention, and material security and comfort.

It finds real peace when it says what it actually thinks instead of living up to appearances.

Strengths
  • Recharged by steering someone the right way
  • Strengthened when people listen
  • Enjoys uniting people behind a cause
  • Glad to create abundance for others
Shadow side
  • Drained when interrupted or ignored
